Our Story
Silem Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports education-centered, school-linked nutrition, and family support programs in Haiti.
We do not operate schools. We work in partnership with community-based schools, educators, and local organizations to deliver services and strengthen long-term community resilience..
Silem Foundation was born from a long-standing commitment to education and community development in Haiti.
In 1985, in a small village in northern Haiti, a group of dedicated community members came together with a shared belief: education is the foundation of lasting change. With limited resources but strong determination, a small school was established in a single room, secured with palm branches and sustained by the collective effort of the community.
Over time, that modest beginning grew into a school of 11 classrooms, serving generations of children and standing as a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and local leadership. What began as a community initiative has since evolved into Silem Foundation-an organization committed to strengthening education systems, supporting families, and working alongside communities to create sustainable opportunities for the future.
Today, Silem Foundation builds on this legacy by partnering with schools and local leaders to expand access to quality education and essential support services such as school meals and operational support for children and families in northern Haiti and partner communities.
Our Approach

Silem Foundation takes a community-led, partnership-based approach to development. Rather than delivering short-term aid, we focus on strengthening local capacity by working closely with school leadership, educators, and community members to design programs that are culturally grounded, practical, and sustainable. This includes supporting school operations, teacher retention, learning materials, and basic student needs that directly impact attendance and learning outcomes.
Our work centers on education as a catalyst for broader impact, supporting learning environments, strengthening school operations, and addressing key barriers that prevent children from accessing and succeeding in school.
Looking Ahead
Through strategic school partnerships, Silem Foundation aims to support up to 20,000 students through a network of partner schools over the next five years, expanding our reach while maintaining strong governance, accountability, and local ownership.
